Keywords:
History; Currency; Cryptocurrencies; Monetary Monopoly; Regulation.Abstract
Money was not always the way it is today and its history is of great importance to understand its evolution. The currency went through several forms, from its conception to the model in which it is known today and which is not yet stabilized. In this essay, the complex history and evolution of the currency until the present day will be addressed. With an analysis of cryptocurrencies as an alternative currency and its influence on the monetary monopoly imposed by the State. As a hypothesis, it is presented as the creation of a new currency, through technological evolution, the end of state sovereignty and the need for its regulation. The methodology used is qualitative, through bibliographic research, based on scientific investigation and interpretation of Brazilian and foreign norms and doctrines. The existence of currency is related to state power, so for its decentralization to occur, cryptocurrencies must be recognized and regulated as a de facto currency by the legal system, only then will we be facing the freedom of monetary monopoly.
